Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ lb ground beef
  • Frozen tater tots, thawed
  • ½ medium onion, chopped
  • ½ pkg Lipton onion soup mix
  • 10oz can cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 Cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup of water
  • ¼ Cup ketchup (optional in step two)
  • 1 Can of green beans, drained (optional)

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  2. In a pan over medium heat, sauté onion and brown beef
  3. Transfer beef and onions to a 12”x8” baking pan
  4. Mix in the cream of mushroom soup and ½ cup of water (if using green beans, mix in now)
  5. Sprinkle ½ package of onion soup mix on top
  6. Top mixture with a row of tater tots
  7. Bake, uncovered, for 25 minutes
  8. Sprinkle on the shredded cheese and bake for another 10 minutes

Suggested Pairings:

My mom loves to pair it with cottage cheese. If you do not add green beans to the recipe, they make a good side.

Recipe's Story:

This is such a midwestern staple if I do say so myself. My mom would make this often. Probably because it was an easy go to that covered all the nutritional basis and its very tasty. It is in my top 10 meals made that makes me think of home.
