Ingredients
- 1 cup Shortening
- 2 cup Sugar
- 2 Eggs
- 4 cups Flour
- 1 tsp Salt
- 1 tsp Baking Powder
- 1 cup Sour Milk or Buttermilk
- 1 tsp Baking Soda
- 2 tsp Nutmeg
- 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
Directions (Steps, Oven Temperature, Time per Step)
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees
- In a large bowl, cream the shortening and sugar; add eggs one at a time and beat well
- In a small bowl, mix sour milk/buttermilk with baking soda
- In a medium bowl, sift together flour, salt, baking powder, and nutmeg
- Combine the dry mixture, as well as milk/baking soda mixture, into the creamed shortening/sugar mixture, alternating between wet and dry mixtures
- Add vanilla extract; stir until combined
- Drop, by the spoon-full, onto a greased cookie sheet and bake for 12-15 minutes

This recipe is from my great grandmother's family cookbook. It has always been a favorite of mine and is something I look forward to for special occasions and holidays.
