Ingredients
- ¾ cup all-purpose flour
- ¼ measuring teaspoon baking soda
- ¼ measuring teaspoon salt
- ⅓ cup butter
- ¾ cup sugar
- 2 measuring tablespoons water
- 1 12-ounce package (2 cups) semi-sweet real chocolate morsels; divided
- 1 measuring teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 eggs
- ½ cup chopped walnuts (optional)
- Any 16-ounce tub of frosting, any flavor (original recipe says Betty Crocker Caramel Chocolate Nut Frosting, but we’ve found ordinary chocolate, or even no frosting, just as delicious)
Directions (Steps, Oven Temperature, Time per Step)
- Preheat oven to 325 degrees F.
- In a small bowl, combine flour, baking soda, and salt; set aside.
- In a small saucepan, combine butter, sugar, and water. Bring just to a boil, then remove from heat.
- Add 6-ounces (1 cup) semi-sweet chocolate morsels and vanilla extract to the butter, sugar, and water mixture. Stir until morsels melt and mixture is smooth. Transfer to a large bowl.
- Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
- Gradually blend in flour mixture.
- Stir in remaining 1 cup chocolate morsels and, if desired, the walnuts.
- Spread in greased 9x13-inch baking pan.
- Bake 25 minutes, and let cool completely.
- Spread with frosting and cut into squares.
Suggested Pairings (Optional)
Excellent with ice cream
Recipe’s Story: Anecdote (Three to Five Sentences)
These are the brownies I grew up bringing to every birthday party, family gathering, and class party. Legend says that this recipe won some sort of award in the 1980s, although I have no evidence to prove it except for a blue ribbon sticker my little brother stuck on the original paper copy of the recipe. These brownies are very tasty with or without frosting and are a little denser than the average brownie, but always enjoyed!
